England Fail to Fire

Wow, what a lot of hype before the World Cup for not much action on the field. England’s team of hopefuls, with many claiming that ‘this was the year’, turned out to be a squad of duds.

Yes, England had a more-than-disappointing early exit from the Tournament. But what was more worrying than their results, was their performance in each of the games; they never looked like a highly-ranked International team.

In my opinion, a lot of it came down to selection, I don’t think the players were the best that England has to offer. And obviously injury played a part, they severely missed Beckham down the right wing, with neither Milner or Lennon providing much attacking potency.

As I said before their campaign got under way: too much is made of Rooney. Yes, he is a good striker. BUT, he is not world-class. Adverts and speculations at the start of the tournament were putting him in the same category as Messi, Kaka and David Villa, but when you compare their contributions to his, he falls way short.

As for his strike-partner Heskey, what can you say? He was a good servant in the past, but taking him to the World Cup was an obvious blunder.

The backline had no pace, other than Cole stuck out on the left, and that includes the defensive midfielder of Barry who also failed to impress. Terry’s days must be numbered, he was caught out a few times at the back; maybe it’s time for Dawson to have run in the team.

All-in-all, it was bit sad to see some top players have such a disappointing tournament in what will most likely be their last World Cup.
