Reds Save The Big Guns for Blackburn

All the drama of the Liverpool boardroom is now finally over with New England Sport Venture having finally completed the purchase of the club. Last weekend the new owner John Henry was at Goodison Pak to watch his new acquisition in a dismal, losing performance against Merseyside rivals Everton.

With priority being placed on Sunday’s game against Blackburn Rovers, Liverpool chose to rest some senior players and sent a weakened team to Italy to take on Napoli in the Europa Cup. There were a few decent performances, and overall the Reds played well enough to earn a point in a nil-nil draw.

Jay Spearing stood out for me, and he performed a lot better than the efforts I’ve seen from Lucas, Meireles and Poulsen lately, and I really hope he features at some time against Blackburn. Also the team looked much more threatening with a 4-4-2 with new-boy Jonjo Shelvey partnering Ngog up front. I wish Liverpool would adopt this formation more often and do away with the two holding midfielders. I think Babel, and not Ngog, should play alongside Torres, with Cole Gerrard, Raul and Jovanovic across the middle.

We’ll see what Hodgson decides on Sunday.
