Liverpool vs Manchester United.
The battleground was set at Anfield, a place United had lost at in their previous three visits. In fact the last United player to score a winner at Anfield was Carlos Tevez.
The first half was, predictably, a cagey affair, with a lot of shadow boxing in a congested midfield, but in the second half the game really came alive. Initially Liverpool were slightly superior without completely dominating the game
The Reds’ back four all had a good game. The midfield was a bit more varied; Lucas sucked as usual, Charlie Adam showed glimpses of his potential, but it was the returning skipper, Steven Gerrard, who had the stabilizing and calming influence on his team.
The Manchester United players, for the most part, seemed invisible. Big names such as Ryan Giggs went missing early on and never made much impact on the pitch. Chris Smalling was kept busy at right-back, and showed he should have a bright future.
United skipper Patrice Evra was a bit paradoxical in that he defended well, but battled to control his emotions. In contrast to his Liverpool counterpart he got caught up in petty arguments, and stupidly got himself booked for chirping too much to the referee. He wound the home fans up even more by, after receiving treatment right in front of the booing home fans, getting up and kissing the Manchester United badge to work them up.
Unsurprisingly Gerrard was the player to break the deadlock, but substitute Hernandez equalized with just ten minutes to go. In the dying minutes Liverpool threw everything at United and a combination of luck, good saves and bad finishing kept United in the game.
There was a feeling that if the game continued any longer the home team would definitely snatch another goal, and United would have a player sent off.
So points shared, but Liverpool would probably think of it as two points dropped, sentiments confirmed by the Liverpool skipper in the post match interview.
